Kids

Every Tuesday morning l'Heure du Conte takes place at the French Institute in Scotland’s library where children books are being read in French. We’ve decided to launch the online version allowing you and your children to not miss this rendez-vous!

This week, the book is Le vélo de Jo by Raphaël Fejtö.
Watch the video online on the French Institute in Scotland’s Youtube channel.

You can also find more online activities in French for kids on the Ecole des Loisirs website.

L'ours, lui, ferait bien du pingouin son prochain repas. Entre ces deux-là naîtra finalement une amitié bienveillante, faite pour durer.

Two isolated strangers, confronted to danger, face each other. An injured polar bear and a castaway penguin. The penguin is hoping to convince the bear to offer him some space on his iceberg. Become a member and be the first informed of our events. If you are not yet a member of the Institut français d'Ecosse, we invite you to join. Already a member? Book your place early!

About the author:
Born in 1947, Françoise Sylvestre is a journalist, writer, librarian and editor with a passion for the sea and travels. Passionate about navigation, she also had the opportunity to travel to San Blas, to stay in La Reunion, the Saints and St. Bartholomew, as well as in most of the Ponant Islands. First settled in Belle-Ile where she had created, in 1998, L'âme vagabonde, she transplanted her maritime bookstore, art gallery and publishing house in 2001 to l'Île-aux-Moines, in the Gulf of Morbihan, where she now lives and engages in writing.

About the book: Robert Louis Stevenson, Les chemins de la liberté
Man of letters, novelist, poet, adventurer, born in Edinburgh, Robert Louis Stevenson was an exceptional traveller and remains a committed and sensitive travelling companion. Fragile child from the Scottish Puritan bourgeoisie, rebellious adult, citizen of the world dedicated to the defence of oppressed peoples, throughout his life the author of Treasure Island and a thousand other stories have never ceased to criss-cross seas and continents in search of freedom. Freedom to think, live and love.

Talk: Fiston Mwanza Mujila, TRAM 83

The author Fiston Mwanza Mujila and the translator Roland Glasser will be with us at the French Institute to talk about the book TRAM 83.

Become a member and be the first informed of our events. If you are not yet a member of the Institut français d'Ecosse, we invite you to join. Already a member? Book your place early!

© Author: Fiston Mwanza Mujila. Photograph: Gaël Turine

About the author:
Fiston Mwanza Mujila was born in 1981 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, where he went to a Catholic school before studying Literature and Human Sciences at Lubumbashi University. He now lives in Graz, Austria and is pursuing a PhD in Romance Languages. His writing has been awarded with numerous prizes, including the Gold Medal at the 6th Jeux de la Francophonie in Beirut as well as the Best Text for Theater (“Preis für das beste Stück,” State Theater, Mainz) in 2010. His novel Tram 83 was a French Voices 2014 grant recipient.

His poems, prose works, and plays are reactions to the political turbulence that has come in the wake of the independence of the Congo and its effect on day-to-day life. As he describes in one of his poems, his texts describe a “geography of hunger:” hunger for peace, freedom, and bread. His texts have been published in the original French and in translation in many journals and anthologies in several European countries, and he has been performing at readings and festivals since 2002.

About the book: TRAM 83
Tram 83 is a gripping story that unfolds in the heart of an eclectic crowd which is gathered at the train station of an imaginary African country’s capital. Over the course of a breathtaking journey, Mujila reveals the power of literature against a postcolonial backdrop. Tram 83, whose story is well showcased by a fantastic translation, is funny and energetic.

This is Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s first novel. It was first published in French in August 2014 as a lead title of the rentrée litteraire by Éditions Métailié. It has been shortlisted and won numerous literary prizes in France and Austria, and has been translated into six languages.

Talk: Jérôme Tubiana, Guantánamo Kid: The True Story of Mohammed El-Gharani

Jérôme Tubiana will be with us to talk about the book Guantánamo Kid: The True Story of Mohammed El-Gharani

Become a member and be the first informed of our events. If you are not yet a member of the Institut français d'Ecosse, we invite you to join. Already a member? Book your place early!

About the authors:
Jérôme Tubiana is a journalist and independent researcher. He has contributed to National Geographic, Foreign Affairs, The London Review of Books, Foreign Policy and many other publications. An expert on conflicts and armed groups in the Sahara, the Horn of Africa and Latin America, he has worked for various NGOs, think tanks and humanitarian organizations, including the International Crisis Group, Action Against Hunger and the United States Institute of Peace. He lives in Paris.

Alexandre Franc is a comic book artist and writer. He is the creator of over a dozen graphic novels, including Agatha: The Real Life of Agatha Christie. He is also an illustrator for youth periodicals, educational books and the communications industry. He lives in Paris. _

About the book: Guantánamo Kid: The True Story of Mohammed El-Gharani
Saudi Arabia offers few prospects for the bright young Mohammed El-Gharani. With roots in Chad, Mohammed is treated like a second-class citizen. His access to healthcare and education are restricted; nor can he make the most of his entrepreneurial spirit. At the age of 14, having scraped together some money as a street trader, Mohammed seizes an opportunity to study in Pakistan. One Friday in Karachi, Mohammed is detained during a raid on his local mosque. After being beaten and interrogated, he is sold to the American government by the Pakistani forces as a member of Al-Qaida with links to Osama Bin Laden, but Mohammed has heard of neither. The Americans fly him first to Kandahar and then to Guantánamo Bay.

In Guantánamo Kid, Jérôme Tubiana and Alexandre Franc tell the eye-opening, heart-wrenching story of one of Guantánamo’s youngest detainees.
