Franco-Scottish Ceilidh / Un Bal Franco-Ecossais

Come and celebrate the Auld Alliance between France and Scotland in a beautiful building in the heart of Edinburgh. This is a unique event, jointly organised by the Institut français d'Ecosse and the Scots Music Group, to honour the visit by musicians and dancers, Les Etournias, from the La Rochelle area of France.

Edinburgh’s Ceilidh Caleerie Dance Band will warm the evening up in the traditional Scottish way. Expert callers from both countries will show the way, making it a great opportunity to learn new dances and make new friends.

About the Ceilidh Caleerie Dance Band
The Ceilidh Caleerie Dance Band grew out of the Scots Music Group’s ‘Playing for Dancing’ class and now plays regularly for community and charity ceilidhs around Edinburgh. The Band’s policy is to play at events for good causes which couldn’t otherwise hold a ceilidh. The band is a group of enthusiastic traditional Scottish music players who enjoy playing music for dancing.

About the Etournias Association
Based near La Rochelle in the Charente-Maritime (France), Les Etournias was created 40 years ago. It is composed of dancers and musicians regularly playing in folk dance events. Music played by the orchestra of “Les Etournias : les Toqués du Tempo” reflects the wealth and variety of the French traditional repertoire, ranging from local to national (and sometimes international) tunes.

Their travel to Scotland involves 28 people, including 15 members of the Toqués du Tempo who will play accordion, violin, guitar, saxophone and flute while being accompanied by dancers.

History Talk: Napoleon on Saint Helena

Charles-Éloi Vial is a Curator at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, specialised in the French First Empire. His talk will deliver insights on a little known period of Napoleon’s life: his captivity on Saint Helena.

Napoleon on Saint Helena
Mostly known through the memoirs and personal diaries of those who accompanied the emperor during his exile, Napoleon’s captivity on Saint Helena can also be studied from primary sources. For instance, the archives of the island’s governor, Sir Hudson Lowe, form an astonishing documentary corpus which thoroughly depicts daily life in Longwood House. Of equal interest are Napoleon’s own manuscripts, which epitomise the captive’s intellectual vivacity, and letters exchanged with his correspondents in Europe between 1815 and 1821, wherein often unsettling confidences are shared. Though many documents are kept in London, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France also has in its possession an outstanding English language archive which sheds new light on the emperor’s final years.

About the Speaker
Archivist, paleographer, and graduate of the Ecole nationale des Chartes, from which he holds a PhD in history, Charles-Éloi Vial is a Curator in the Manuscripts Department of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, where he is in charge of Modern and Contemporary manuscripts. A specialist of the First French Empire, he is the author of Marie-Louise (Perrin, 2017), a biography of Napoleon’s second wife, which received the 2017 Prix Premier Empire from the Fondation Napoléon. His most recent publication is Napoléon à Sainte-Hélène. L'encre de l'exil (Perrin, 2018).

Synopsis:
Ernest is a big bear from Charabie. He likes playing music and eating marmalade. He lives with Celestine, a little orphan mouse, and they share his house. Our two friends never get bored! When the first snowflakes start to fall they need to prepare for Ernest’s hibernation: they must take care of Bibi, their wild goose, who will fly away before the big winter, prepare cakes for Ernest and go to the mice’s ball to celebrate the first day of winter.

Rencontre littéraire with Pierre Ducrozet

The Institut français d'Ecosse is proud to organise a Rencontre littéraire with Pierre Ducrozet, dedicated to the relationship between poetry and ecology, his works, and the art of translation.

Pierre Ducrozet (b. 1982) is a renowned writer and translator, especially of poetry. His last book, entitled L'Invention des corps, was rewarded with the Prix de Flore 2017. Its ambitious exploration of the multiple ways bodies are redefined in the modern era is seminal to the reflection he will develop at the Institut français d'Ecosse.

French Wine Tasting By Great Grog

The Institut français d'Ecosse and Great Grog, an independent wine merchant serving Scotland’s Central Belt since 1999, invite you to a wine tasting on the evening of May 24th. What better way to start your weekend?

The experts from Great Grog will shed new light on classic wine varieties from Alsace, Burgundy or Côtes du Rhône and introduce you to the surprising character and flavours of wines from Languedoc and the Loire Valley.

For total beginners and refined palates alike, the night will be hosted by a French sommelier in his mother tongue. Other members of the team will be at your disposal for explanations in English.

The selection will comprise ten wines, some of them less known to the public, giving you the chance to discover them for the first time, and will be accompanied by appetisers.
