Odile Hughson is a History enthusiast, currently a volunteer guide at the National Museum of Scotland. She will deliver a talk about the exile of the Orleans family to the South-West of London for more than a century, and present her book, Royal Friendships, which delves into this period.
The exiled Orleans family lived in the area of South-West London intermittently for more than a century. This talk will describe their life in exile, stressing on the places they visited -including Scotland- and the various friendships they made. This will introduce her book published both in French and English: Amities Royales (Royal Friendships).
About Odile Hughson
Odile Hughson lived close to Claremont (Surrey), the house Queen Victoria lent Louis-Philippe when he was deposed during the Revolution of 1848, famous for its landscape garden. She became interested in her illustrious neighbours. She is now a Volunteer Guide at the National Museum of Scotland.

Dr Vladislav Rjéoutski is a Research Fellow at the German Historical Institute in Moscow. He will present a book he co-wrote: The French Language in Russia, which recounts the adoption of the French language by the elites of imperial Russia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
About the book
The French Language in Russia is interdisciplinary, approaching its subject from the angles of various kinds of history and historical sociolinguistics. Beyond its bearing on some of the grand narratives of Russian thought and literature, this book may afford more general insight into the social, political, cultural, and literary implications and effects of bilingualism in a speech community over a long period. It should also enlarge understanding of francophonie as a pan-European phenomenon. On the broadest plane, it has significance in an age of unprecedented global connectivity, for it invites us to look beyond the experience of a single nation and the social groups and individuals within it in order to discover how languages and the cultures and narratives associated with them have been shared across national boundaries.

Every month the group meets to discuss a book selected in advance (from classical to contemporary French literature) and discover the other members’ views on them. The discussion is held in French.
In July, the group will be discussing Les années by Annie Ernaux (2008, Gallimard), who will be one of the star guests of this year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Created in 1982 the Fête de la musique is now an established tradition in France (and many other places around Europe and the Francophone world) taking place on the 21st of June. On that very special day, every musician – amateur or professional – comes out onto the streets, the squares, and the cafés to perform for free.
With close to 4 hours of singers and songwriters, classical musicians, and DJ/MCs, the Institut français d'Ecosse’s fête de la musique is a fun way to kick off your weekend! Looking beyond Scotland, we’ll also be participating in one of the global objectives of the fête this year, now in its 38th edition, to celebrate and focus on Europe by kicking off the evening at 6pm with a participative performance of the European anthem, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, and a reading of the German poet Friedrich Schiller’s text.
The programme for the evening will proceed as follows*:

Drawing Europe Together is an exhibition of vibrant and thought-provoking illustrations by esteemed children’s book artists from across Europe, organised in collaboration with Axel Scheffler and the European Commission.
About the exhibition
The seed of an idea for this exhibition was planted the day after the EU referendum of 23rd June 2016. Award-winning children’s book illustrator Axel Scheffler, who was devastated by the result of the vote, travelled to Germany to take part in a Brexit discussion on the radio. Afterwards, he had dinner with an equally concerned group of people, including Markus Weber, children’s book publisher at Moritz Verlag. Believing that a united Europe was the greatest guarantee of peace and prosperity, they wondered what they could do. Some time later, Weber came up with the idea to ask his illustrators to create a ‘drawing for Europe’. Whether they wanted to draw something about the story of Europe, the European Union or anything else on the subject, was left entirely up to them.
The pictures were first shown during the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2017 and afterwards at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in Berlin. In November 2017, The Guardian published a feature about the project, and this gave Scheffler’s editor at Scholastic Children’s Books the idea that the exhibition should come to the UK.
The Institut français in London – in collaboration with Pulse of Europe, a pan-European citizens’ movement for a united Europe – took up the baton and hosted the exhibition at its premises in April/May 2018. The Drawing (for) Europe exhibition was highly acclaimed by the press and public alike. Some British-based children’s book illustrators were asked to contribute; not surprisingly, many commented visually on Brexit.
About the book
Scheffler’s long-term publisher, Pan Macmillan, then decided to create a book – Drawing Europe Together, Forty-five Illustrators, One Europe – and invited even more illustrators to contribute. In addition, Macmillan asked all the artists to write a few words to explain the thoughts behind their drawings. The forty-five illustrations were exhibited together for the first time at the launch of the book at Waterstones Piccadilly, London, in November 2018. In partnership with Axel Scheffler, Pan Macmillan and the European Commission, we are now able to tour these illustrations around the UK, bringing these often touching and thought-provoking artworks to a wider audience.
