Off to the mountains!
As another winter season is currently underway in the Alps’ numerous resorts, this conference will explore the early years of tourism in the Alps, in order to understand how they became the mountainous space ‘par excellence’ in Europe. From the early discovery of Chamonix by British travellers in 1741 to the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924, and of course Mont Blanc’s first ascent in 1786, this conference will attempt to explain why these valleys played a crucial role in order to shape the Alps’ reputation during the Age of Enlightenment. This reputation then allowed the Alps to develop tourism infrastructures and welcome increasing numbers of visitors in the nineteenth century.
