To mark 50 years since the événements de mai, Gavin Bowd, of the University of St Andrews, delivers a talk on British perspectives on May 68.
What effect did the spectacular événements de mai 68 have across the Channel? Did they inspire solidarity or just confirm stereotypes about their turbulent neighbours? What legacy of May 68, if any, was there in Britain? This talk examines such questions, drawing on the British press, dispatches from the UK embassy in Paris, and documents from the archives of the British and French Communist Parties.
Gavin Bowd is Reader in French at the University of St Andrews. His publications include: The Last Communard. Adrien Lejeune, the Unexpected LIfe of a Revolutionary (2016), Fascist Scotland. Caledonia and the Far Right (2013), and Paul Morand et la Roumanie (2003). He is a translator of Michel Houellebecq, Sabri Louatah and Guillevic.
