About:
British-Swiss violinist Naomi Burrell enjoys a diverse career as a musician with a specialism in historical performance. She plays with many of the UK’s leading early music ensembles, such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of Ancient Music, I Fagiolini, Dunedin Consort, La Nuova Musica, Classical Opera and Solomon’s Knot, and is the concert master for English Touring Opera. Naomi specialises in theatrical projects, such as at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, with ‘Badinage’, a folk ensemble who perform original French street songs from the 18th Century, and with the award winning Norwegian ensemble ‘Barokksolistene’. Naomi was elected an associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM).

Cellist and viola da gamba player Gavin Kibble studied first at the University of Oxford with Laurence Dreyfus and then at the Royal Academy of Music with Jonathan Manson and Joseph Crouch. He now plays with many of the UK’s leading orchestras and ensembles, including the English Concert, the Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Gabrieli Consort, the Dunedin Consort, the Sixteen, Classical Opera, La Serenissima and the Early Opera Company. He is principal cellist of English Touring Opera and has been guest continuo cellist at the Opera del Liceu in Barcelona.

David Gerrard performs on the harpsichord, clavichord, fortepiano and organ. Working extensively with Oxford’s Bate Collection and the Russell and Mirrey Collections in Edinburgh, he has given recitals on many significant historical keyboard instruments. In demand as a continuo player, David has performed and recorded with ensembles including Dunedin Consort, London Mozart Players, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Royal Northern Sinfonia, along with various appearances on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and BBC Radio Scotland. Concert - 4 Times Baroque

“Baroque is the New Modern!” according to the talents from Germany, 4 Times Baroque. Become a member and be the first informed of our events. If you are not yet a member of the Institut français d'Ecosse, we invite you to join. Already a member? Book your place early!

About 4 Times Baroque:
4 Times Baroque
Jan Nigges (recorder)
Jonas Zschenderlein (violin)
Karl Simko (cello)
Alexander von Heißen (harpsichord)

4 Times Baroque was founded in 2013 by the four young musicians Jan Nigges (recorder), Jonas Zschenderlein (violin), Karl Simko (cello) and Alexander von Heißen (harpsichord). Based in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) the quartet is one of the most exciting ensembles of the new generation of early music performers and has already been invited to well-known festivals and concert halls throughout Germany and Europe. The press described them as “popstars of the early music scene” and “four young shooting stars.“

As part of the Eeemerging program (Emerging European Ensembles), the quartet received support from several early music centres throughout Europe. Concerts and residencies had been organized in France, Poland, Latvia, Germany and Italy.

The quartet is dedicated to developing a close rapport with their audience, and not only through their musical performances: entertaining concert talks and discussions are conceived to provide musical and historical backdrop to their programs, and allow the public to stay up-to-date with the ensemble’s personal work. The musicians’ close friendship has carried over into their still-budding professional careers, and their unique rapport is palpable on stage and in their playing.

4 Times Baroque got invitations to famous Festivals in Germany as Rheingau Musik Festival, Thüringer Bachwochen, Oberstdorfer Musiksommer, Mozartfest Würzburg, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Händel Festspiele Göttingen, Festival d'Ambronay (France), Meraner Musikwochen (Italy), Mozarteum Salzburg (Austria). Highlights in 2020 include concerts in Istanbul, Edinburg, at the Telemann Festtage Magdeburg, Bachfest Leipzig and in Japan.

For their first CD “Caught in Italian Virtuosity” (Deutsche Harmonia Mundi / Sony) 4 Times Baroque was awarded in Oktober 2018 with the renowned “OPUS Klassik” Young Ensemble of the Year. The next CD which includes works from J.S. Bach and G.F. Telemann will be produced in this year.

German Cinema: The People vs Fritz Bauer (Der Staat Gegen Fritz Bauer)

The Institut français d'Ecosse will proudly be hosting screenings of contemporary German films in partnership with the Goethe Institut in Glasgow.

The film this week is The People vs Fritz Bauer (Der Staat Gegen Fritz Bauer) by Lars Kraume.

© Imdb

Synopsis:
Germany, 1957. Attorney General Fritz Bauer receives crucial evidence on the whereabouts of SS-Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann. The lieutenant colonel, responsible for the mass deportation of the Jews, is allegedly hiding in Buenos Aires. Bauer, himself Jewish, has been trying to take Nazi crimes to court ever since his return from Danish exile. However, there has been no success so far due to the fierce German determination to repress its sinister past. Because of his distrust in the German justice system, Fritz Bauer contacts the Israeli secret service Mossad, and, by doing so, commits treason. Influential people would like to see Fritz Bauer finally rendered “harmless”. Denunciations, which even spill over into his private life, aspiring to establish his homosexuality and therefore a breach of Paragraph 175, threaten to wear him and his colleagues down. Lars Kraume’s political thriller draws from elements of melodrama, both to create an image of a German hero in the years following World War II, and to enrich and expand the character with facets that fictionalize him as an assailable individual.

Starring Burghart Klaussner, Ronald Zehrfeld, Sebastian Blomberg, Jörg Schüttauf and Lilith Stangenberg
