For over 70 years the home of the French Institute in Scotland, Randolph Crescent has been well known as a little corner of France to many in Edinburgh. It first opened as a venue for the representation of French culture in Scotland in 1946 to prepare the first edition of the Edinburgh Festivals.
In the fall of 2017, we will start a new chapter for the official representation of France in Scotland by moving up to the Old Town. The Institut français d'Écosse and the French consulate will settle at the Lothian Chambers on the Royal Mile into a ‘House of France’. We envision it as a hub for European culture.
On Saturday 23 September, we offer you the opportunity to fondly reminisce on the past 70 years at Randolph Crescent with the exceptional opening of the old premises. It will provide one of the very last chances to access the three classic buildings of the most iconic part of Edinburgh’s original New Town and to share with you the secrets of all the nooks and crannies of the little maze which has been our work place for all those years.
We will conclude the day with a 'dawn ceremony’, when we will lower the French flag from the façade for the very last time.

For the first time, the 2017 edition of Doors Open Day will also include the Scottish Free French House, the official French consular residence.
A typical New Town mansion, The Scottish Free French House is still occupied and used in the original spirit of the Georgian Terraces. The building was donated by a generous Franco-Belgian businessman and inaugurated in 1942 by General Charles de Gaulle, to serve as a resting place for officers of the Free French Naval Forces stationed in Scotland during WWII. After the war, it quickly became the residence of the consul general of France in Scotland.
Other French connections on Regent Terrace include the houses where the exiled duke and duchess of Angoulême (respectively son and heir of the deposed king Charles X and daughter of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette) and the duchess of Berry (mother to the last Bourbon pretender to the throne of France) sojourned after the 1830 revolution in France.

Jazz duo pianist Cédric Hanriot and bassist Bertrand Beruard are revisiting a number of popular French songs (Brel, Piaf, Delpech, Nougaro) and rebuilding them in the jazz piano duo context whilst preserving the essence of each song and illustrating their love of Afro-American music.

A reading of Great War French poems translated and performed by Ian Higgins, with commentary on historical and literary background.
The French poetry of the Great War is still little known in the English-speaking world. Higgins will begin his talk with consideration of important differences between this body of work and the best-known British Great War poetry. The talk will then take the form of a ‘lecture-recital’, with readings of sixteen poems, in Higgins’ translation, chosen to illustrate something of the variety of subject matter, tone and style in this poetry. The poems will be presented mainly in chronological order, each introduced with background information on the poet and the state of the war.

In October, France is celebrating its animation cinema with a month-long festival. Did you know that France is the third most profilic producer of animation films in the world? Or that it’s pioneer, Émile Reynaud was a Frenchman?
Every year, in October, as a tribute to Émile Reynaud, a celebration a France’s lesser known film industry is organize. It is scheduled ahead of 28 October, International Animation Day, which commemorates the first public performance of Charles-Émile Reynaud’s Théâtre Optique at the Grevin Museum in 1892.
The Institut français d'Écosse is taking part in this 16th edition of the festival from the 19th to the 27th of October with different styles of animation for all ages.
