  • Do you want to perform in one of Edinburgh’s most centrally located venues without having to pay for the use of the space or advancing your own Edinburgh Festival Fringe registration fees?

If your answers to these questions were oui, oui, et oui, you’re in luck because the Institut français d'Ecosse has opened its application period for those who would like to participate in its 2020 festival programme, Vive le Fringe !, taking place 7-30 August 2020.

Day 4- 24 November 2019

The Gaelic Songs of Herring Gutters with Meg Hyland

  • Where: Institut français, Salle Kieffer (1st Floor)
  • When: 24 November 2019, 12.00-1.00pm
  • About this event: For over a hundred years, thousands of Hebridean women traveled all over Scotland, England and beyond to spend their summers gutting herring. Drawing on oral history archives, Meg Hyland shares her recent research into the Gaelic songs women sang while gutting herring from the 1850s to the 1950s.

The Forgotten Women of the French Revolution with David Mountain

  • About this event: When it comes to the French Revolution, we’ve only heard half the story. Join writer David Mountain as he explores the forgotten accounts of women during this turbulent time – from assassin Charlotte Corday to social reformer Marie Gouze – and asks why their stories were sidelined and silenced.

The Rise and Fall of the City of Money with Ray Perman

  • About this event: The Darien disaster of 1700 drove Scotland into union with England. The crash of 2008 wrecked the city¹s two largest and oldest banks ­ and its reputation. In between, Edinburgh rose to become a global beacon for the financial world. But this is not just the story of our financial institutions, but of the personalities too; hard-drinking Presbyterian ministers, Sir Walter Scott, and Fred Goodwin, the man who broke the biggest bank in the world.

Why is Scots DNA so complicated? with Dr Bruce Durie

  • About this event: The Scots are at least five different historic peoples, so it’s not possible to answer the question “What is Scottish DNA?” simply, but it’s possible to have some fun along the way. Dr Bruce Durie is a scientist with a Doctorate in History. He’s not tall, dark, or handsome, but he’s a crackerjack Genealogist who knows what he’s talking about.

Lesbian Lives: Revealing Hidden Herstories with Freya Monk-McGowan

  • About this event: Glasgow Women’s Library is improving access to its lesbian archive through a project focusing on digitisation, collections care, outreach and contemporary art. One Last Push
Disability History Scotland will be joining us with ‘One Last Push’ A handcrafted animation produced by award-winning production company “Muckle Hen”. Featuring the voices of disabled people today reflecting on the impact of the sheer number of returning wounded of World War 1 on Scotland and how it brought about changes to society which remain fundamental to how we live today.

UncoverED
UncoverED is an Edinburgh Global funded project, working to rediscover Edinburgh alumni from around the world who have slipped through the cracks of history. The project, led by Henry Mitchell and Tom Cunningham from the University of Edinburgh, and with the help of student researchers, found a number of alumni, who have made important contributions to society, as well as incredible achievements during their life.

  • About this event: Andrea Gullotta’s 2018 book and virtual exhibition “Beauty in Hell” focused on the creative efforts made by prisoners during their term in the Soviet Gulag. To Make and Save Money: Sugar and Slavery in 18th century Jamaica with Alastair Learmont

Industrial History Panel with Eddie Small, Caroline Brown, Jacqueline Eccles and Emma Halford-Forbes (Chair)

  • Where: Institut français, Salle Emilienne Moreau-Evrard (1st Floor)
  • When: 22 November 2019, 12:00-1:30pm
  • About this event: Eddie Small will take us through Dundee’s industrial history. In Hidden Voices: Uncovering Stories of Asylum Care, Caroline and Jacqui will examine the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and explore what it was like to be a patient in an asylum in the 19th century. They will also discuss how this research can inform approaches to mental health care today. All three speakers will then join Emma of Go Industrial! to discuss history, industrial heritage and identity.

The Physix with Siân Hickson

Exhibition Launch and Award Ceremony: Poster Exhibition for Creative Writing Contest

An award ceremony for the 2019 concours d'écriture créative followed by an exhibition displaying the winning texts in poster format. The artworks are created by graphic design students from the University of Edinburgh.

The creative writing competition and related poster exhibition were co-organised by Edinburgh Napier University, the University of Edinburgh, the University of St Andrews, the University of Edinburgh, the Franco-Scottish Society, the Goethe-Institut Glasgow and the Institut français d'Ecosse.

Poster Exhibition: Concours d'écriture créative 2019

Following the award ceremony for the 2019 concours d'écriture créative, this exhibition highlights the winning texts in posters created by graphic design students from Edinburgh College.

The creative writing competition and related poster exhibition were co-organised by Edinburgh Napier University, the University of Edinburgh, the University of St Andrews, Edinburgh College, the Franco-Scottish Society, the Goethe-Institut Glasgow and the Institut français d'Ecosse.
