History like you’ve never heard before. “Previously… Scotland’s History Festival 2019” will take place in the Institut français with amazing events. From the tragic stories of witch-hunting to the mysteries of Scottish DNA, discover the hot topics of this year’s festival!

From the 21st of November to 24th, Previously… will be offering our visitors a wide range of interesting events this year at the Institut français:

Day 4- 24 November 2019

The Gaelic Songs of Herring Gutters with Meg Hyland

  • Where: Institut français, Salle Kieffer (1st Floor)
  • When: 24 November 2019, 12.00-1.00pm
  • About this event: For over a hundred years, thousands of Hebridean women traveled all over Scotland, England and beyond to spend their summers gutting herring. Drawing on oral history archives, Meg Hyland shares her recent research into the Gaelic songs women sang while gutting herring from the 1850s to the 1950s.

The Forgotten Women of the French Revolution with David Mountain

  • Where: Institut français, Médiathèque Sir Patrick Geddes aka Library (1st Floor)
  • When: 24 November 2019, 12.00-1.00pm
  • About this event: When it comes to the French Revolution, we’ve only heard half the story. Join writer David Mountain as he explores the forgotten accounts of women during this turbulent time – from assassin Charlotte Corday to social reformer Marie Gouze – and asks why their stories were sidelined and silenced.

The Rise and Fall of the City of Money with Ray Perman

  • Where: Institut français, Salle Kieffer (1st Floor)
  • When: 24 November 2019, 2.00pm-3.00pm
  • About this event: The Darien disaster of 1700 drove Scotland into union with England. The crash of 2008 wrecked the city¹s two largest and oldest banks ­ and its reputation. In between, Edinburgh rose to become a global beacon for the financial world. But this is not just the story of our financial institutions, but of the personalities too; hard-drinking Presbyterian ministers, Sir Walter Scott, and Fred Goodwin, the man who broke the biggest bank in the world.

Why is Scots DNA so complicated? with Dr Bruce Durie

  • Where: Institut français, Médiathèque Sir Patrick Geddes aka Library (1st Floor)
  • When: 24 November 2019, 3.00pm-4.00pm
  • About this event: The Scots are at least five different historic peoples, so it’s not possible to answer the question “What is Scottish DNA?” simply, but it’s possible to have some fun along the way. Dr Bruce Durie is a scientist with a Doctorate in History. He’s not tall, dark, or handsome, but he’s a crackerjack Genealogist who knows what he’s talking about.

Lesbian Lives: Revealing Hidden Herstories with Freya Monk-McGowan

  • Where: Institut français, Salle Kieffer (1st Floor)
  • When: 24 November 2019, 3.30pm-4.30pm
  • About this event: Glasgow Women’s Library is improving access to its lesbian archive through a project focusing on digitisation, collections care, outreach and contemporary art. Find out about the archives, their history, how they came to be in Glasgow and the ongoing work to bring this cultural heritage to new audiences.
