History Talk: The Life of a French Resistant [In French]

As this event will be held in French, some elements below will be listed in this language.

Stéphanie Trouillard is a French journalist currently working at France 24. She is specialised in the memory of the first and second World Wars. She will present her book, Mon oncle de l'ombre - Enquête sur un maquisard breton (Skol Vreizh, 2018), dedicated to the life of her great uncle, a member of the French Resistance who died in 1944.

Architect Crichton Wood will discuss the key concepts of Scots baronial architecture used in the work of American Architect and theorist, Louis Kahn, including expressive relationships between form and function, and geometric plan transformations. Wood will also discuss the impact of Kahn’s use of Baronial architecture on other American architects of the 20th Century, showing how some of these concepts can be used to develop a modern “Scots,” architecture.

DOD Lecture Series: Building stone in Scotland

Natural stone has been a favoured building material since the early days of human habitation in Scotland, and is still in fashion for modern architecture. The Scottish building stone industry has bequeathed a rich and diverse legacy of stone-built structures which embody the historic fabric of our cities, dwellings, monuments, places of worship and infrastructure. However, proper maintenance of stone buildings and structures poses many challenges. Paul Everett will present a synopsis of Scotland’s history of building in stone, set against a geological background, and will demonstrate how geological knowledge and understanding is helping to maintain and conserve our country’s priceless stone-built heritage.

This lecture is part of the week-long Doors Open Days lecture series, organised by the Cockburn Association. Fest-noz: Ceilidh from Brittany

The Robert Fish Band is inviting Breton artists Poho and Legoffic to put on a Fest-noz, the traditional form of ceilidh in Brittany.

Fest-noz, which literally translates to party night, was created in the 1950s to revive the balls that gathered farmers after toiling in the fields. The night will be a mix of Breton and Scottish influences, with traditional instruments (biniou, bombarde) and dances from both regions.

About the Robert Fish Band
The Robert Fish Band have been getting folk on their feet in Edinburgh and beyond since the great ceilidh revival of the 1990s. We spend many an evening “walking the line between tradition and innovation with sparkling flair – and a highly contagious sense of fun” (Sue Wilson) and have played venues from Blackpool to Brittany, from Leipzig to Lochaber, from Glasgow Green to Gilmerton Miners’ Welfare Club. We play and call the steps for all the well-known Scottish ceilidh dances and a few of the more unusual ones besides, with a line-up of fiddle, accordion/whistle, guitar, bass and percussion.

Take One Action!: The Time of Forests

As part of the Take One Action! Film Festivals, we are hosting a screening of The Time of Forests by François-Xavier Drouet (2018, 1h43min).

Synopsis
A living forest or a green desert? Tomorrow’s landscape will be defined by the choices we make today.

As the symbol of authentic, wild nature, forests across Europe are undergoing an unprecedented phase of industrialisation. Changing forest management practices, intensive agricultural models and privatisation — supported by heavy mechanisation, monoculture, fertilisers and pesticides — are compounded by a loss of traditional know-how.

Through interviews with rangers, forestry commission officials, paper mill operators and land rights campaigners in France, The Time of Forests invites the viewer on a journey to the heart of industrial forestry — and its alternatives.

Wemyss Ware Exhibition Talks

As part of the Victor Murphy Trust’s Wemyss Ware exhibition, the Institut is hosting a series of talks by pottery experts Graeme Cruickshank and Norval Bonney providing a bit of insight into the exhibition and some of the individual pieces on display.

Scheduled Talks

  • The inception of Wemyss Ware (Graeme Cruickshank)
  • Identifying Wemyss Decorators (Norval Bonney)
  • The demise of Wemyss Ware (Graeme Cruickshank)
  • Wemyss post-Kirkcaldy (Norval Bonney)

About Wemyss Ware
Originating in the 19th century in a pottery in Kirkcaldy, Fife, its original and vibrant style was the result of a meeting between Robert Heron, the pottery owner, and Karel Nekola, a decorator from Bohemia, who eventually moved permanently to Scotland to make a life for himself. Wemyss Ware ceramics, easily recognised by the skilful use of colour, interesting shapes and hand-painted details, are among the most collectable and sought-after pieces of Scottish pottery.
