DOD Lecture Series: Edinburgh and the Origins of Global Conservation

Dr Sean O'Reilly, Director of The Institute of Historic Building Conservation will discuss how approaches to conservation vary on a global scale and the influence of Edinburgh in the global conservation movement.

This lecture is part of the week-long Doors Open Days lecture series, organised by the Cockburn Association. Each day there are two lectures exploring different aspects of Edinburgh’s architectural heritage and global connections. On 28th and 29th September, 149 buildings across Edinburgh and East Lothian will be open to you to explore for free. About the Speaker
Seán O'Reilly (BA, MURP, PhD, FSA Scot, FInstLM, FRSA, IHBC) is director of The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), the UK’s professional body for built and historic environment conservation practitioners (https://www.ihbc.org.uk). In this role he helps shape professional conservation standards, training and services across industry, government and education.

An architectural historian with a Masters in Planning (MURP), he holds Fellowships with the Institute of Leadership and Management and the Royal Society of Arts, and has worked in private and NGO sectors, and at universities in London (UCL); Edinburgh, Sheffield and Dublin and elsewhere. He works extensively on conservation, history and planning, with recent papers on conservation history for a Chinese journal and a US conference.
