Wine Tasting: Along the Rhine

Richard Bouglet, director of L'Art du Vin, and Peter Bernhard, wine producer of the Peter Jakob Kühn domain from the Rheingau region of Germany will take you on a journey along both banks of the river Rhine.

Discover three Alsatian and three German Rieslings and learn all about their histories.

About L'Art du Vin
Dalgety Bay, Scotland
At l'Art du Vin we are passionate about wines made by artisan producers that express their terroir. Our bespoke portfolio focusses on wines that are made with passion, integrity and uniqueness of origin while remaining true to environmental and ethical issues. We stock a wide range of biodynamic wines and organic wines alongside our very own range of micro fair trade wines, and we take great pride in being the first Scottish wine merchant to be a certified member of the Soil Association.

About the Peter Jakob Kühn Wine Domain
Oestrich, Rheingau (Germany)
It was no surprise when word reached us that Peter Jakob Kühn had been voted German winemaker of the year for 2016 – his wines are some of the best examples of German produce we have tasted. The Kühn estate was founded in 1786 by Jacobus Kühn and has remained under the watchful eye of his family ever since. Now, along with his wife Angela, and their son Peter Bernhard (who, during his training completed a stage with our friends at Domaine Zind-Humbrecht), cultivates the family land biodynamically, producing a range of Rieslings which showcase the Rheingau terroir. A fervent believer in the ecological benefits of biodynamic farming, Peter is at present, the only producer to follow biodynamic principles in the Rheingau. His wines are made in a fearless manner, with as much as possible left to nature’s own course. His experimental cuvées include wines which have undergone extra-long lees ageing or been fermented and aged in amphora vessels. Peter is a producer we are delighted to introduce to you all and we firmly believe that his wines will become iconic in the very near future.

Talk: Revolution, Abolition and Blackness in the French Empire - The Art of 1800

In her words, Anne Lafont explores “the issue of art and race in its most striking and lesser-known aspects".

About the event
In this lecture, Anne Lafont will reflect upon the question of representation and portraiture of Black people during the French and Haitian Revolutions (1789-1802). Starting from two famous paintings – the Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Belley by the artist Girodet, and the Portrait of Madeleine by Marie-Guilhemine Benoist – as well as lesser-known images such as Toussaint-Louverture’s printed portraits, and other anonymous black figures of the time, Anne Lafont will engage in an interpretation of visual art and identity politics in the dislocation and upheaval of the French Empire around 1800.

About the Speaker
Anne Lafont is Professor (directrice d'études) at EHESS in Paris. She is an art historian and researches visual cultures of the early modern world with a specific interest in Art of the African Diaspora in an eighteenth-century imperial context, and contemporary artistic theory regarding Blackness and Creolization. She has co-edited Plumes et pinceaux. Discours de femmes sur l'art en Europe 1750-1850, 2 vols (Paris: Presses du Réel, 2012) and just completed a book on Art and Race in the Age of Enlightenment: L'art et la race. L'Africain (tout) contre l'oeil des Lumières (Paris: Presses du Réel, 2019). She collaborated to the exhibition Black models: from Géricault to Matisse held in spring 2019 at the Musée d'Osrsay.

This free lecture is a part of The Borders of Identity seminar series (#bordersofidentity), organised in part by the Higher Education, Research and Innovation Department of the French Embassy in London.

Book Launch: "The New Town of Edinburgh: An Architectural Celebration"

In collaboration with Birlinn Books, we are hosting the book launch of The New Town of Edinburgh: An Architectural Celebration edited by Clarisse Godard Desmarest.

About the book
This collection of innovative essays celebrates the New Town of Edinburgh over the 250 years since its original creation. The contributing authors discuss the intellectual, economic and political contexts which provided the impetus for the city of Edinburgh to expand north of the Old Town, and analyse the New Town’s unique architectural status in terms of its size, monumentality and degree of preservation. For centuries, Scotland has pursued innovation, improvement, commerce and contact with England and the Continent; and since medieval times it has been an urbanising land of planned towns. This book reflects on the constantly changing dialogue between Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns, from the eighteenth century to the present time, as the city became increasingly commercialised. It also compares Edinburgh’s New Town with more recent new towns elsewhere, notably nineteenth century Dunedin in New Zealand and Scotland’s planned new-town movement of the twentieth century. The age of conservation is another of the central themes.

By drawing on different approaches to the new town phenomenon in Scotland, this volume pays tribute to Scotland’s vibrant capital, and offers insights into new research on Scotland’s urban development.

About the editor
Clarisse Godard Desmarest is a lecturer at the University of Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens, and a fellow of the Institut Universitaire de France. She specialises in Scottish architectural history and heritage, and has held fellowships at the Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH), Edinburgh College of Art and the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. She holds an Agrégation in English and is a graduate of Sciences Po Paris. Her doctorate at the Sorbonne, jointly supervised by the University of Edinburgh, was awarded a national prize in France for the best thesis on a Scottish subject.

About the event

Hugh Andrew, Birlinn Limited’s Managing Director, and Clarisse Godard Desmarest, the collection’s editor, will offer brief remarks about the importance of The New Town of Edinburgh: An Architectural Celebration. The book launch will be followed by a drinks reception, where many of the collection’s contributors will be in attendance.

The New Town of Edinburgh: An Architectural Celebration will be available for purchase at the event for the discounted price of £30 (normally £40). Clarisse Godard Desmarest and other contributors will be on hand to sign the book.

Rencontre littéraire : Laurence Tardieu

While she is in residence at the University of St Andrews, French author Laurence Tardieu will come to the Institut to discuss her books and writing career with Dr Elise Hugueny-Léger.

About Laurence Tardieu
She was born in Marseille in 1972. She has been writing since she was a child: for her, writing is an essential activity, not just an aspect of life but something that lies at its very heart, making it both possible and meaningful. In 1998, she decided she would devote herself to writing. That same year she discovered theatre and enrolled in a three-year drama course at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique in Paris, graduating in 2001. Her first novel, Comme un père, was published in 2002. For a few years, her activity as a writer ran alongside her theatre work, until, in 2006, she decided to devote herself entirely to writing.

The publication of her sixth novel, La Confusion des peines (2011), marked a turning point in her trajectory as a writer: for the first time, she was dealing with autobiographical material. This text was to have a profound effect, marking a break which led to changes in her writing and her reflections on literature. She next published a writing diary, L'écriture et la vie, which traces her attempt to ‘rediscover meaningful words’ after two years of being unable to write. It was this writing diary which allowed her to banish her fears and return to writing: her next work, Une Vie a soi, came out in 2014. À la fin le silence, a work born of two experiences of trauma and dispossession, one personal, the other collective, was published in 2016. Her most recent work, Nous aurons été vivants (2019) marks a joyful return to fiction.

Her writing is an attempt to strip down experiences and people to their very core: what is left of us when the masks are removed? For her writing is a quest, a quest with truth—our truth(s)—as its endpoint. Writing, above all else, experience. Thrilling experience, but risky too, grappling with life.

After having run a series of writing workshops at the Sorbonne Nouvelle and at Science Po, Tardieu has for the past four years been in charge of a writing course with the NRF (Nouvelle Revue Française) entitled ‘Les frontières de l'intime’.

She is the recipient of many prizes, including the prix Alain Fournier for Puisque rien ne dure.

Quadrille Classes at the Institut français d'Écosse

Come and learn quadrille dance with Talitha MacKenzie, a teacher of Historical Dance & Dance Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. All levels are welcome!

The Franco-Scottish dances so popular in Edinburgh during the Regency period are enjoying a revival – why not join us in celebrating this?

Although similar to Scottish Country Dance, Quadrilles are danced as four couples in a square so that each set has its own ‘community’. Footwork is not overly complicated—the focus is on social interaction. Ballroom dancing has never been so much fun!

Dance your way to fitness without even noticing the effort, while your brain gets its share of exercise remembering the sequence of figures. As the instructions were written in French, you can practice your language skills at the same time.

All levels welcome, no experience necessary; you may come on your own or with a partner. Comfortable clothing and soft, flexible shoes, with low (or no) heel, recommended.

About Talitha MacKenzie
Talitha MacKenzie, who has been studying Historical Dance since the early 1970s, has a degree in Musicology from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she performed Renaissance and Baroque dance and music with Julia Sutton’s Collegium Terpsichore. Currently teaching Historical Dance & Dance Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow, she has been reviving and reconstructing Nathaniel Gow’s Quadrilles from the original scores published in Edinburgh two hundred years ago.

How to enrol
A series of 10 Fortnightly Classes are £70 (£50 for members of the Edinburgh Quadrille Society &/or L'Institut Français); alternatively, you may pay £7/£5 at the door.
