Doors Open Days 2019

For the 5th consecutive year, the Institut français d'Ecosse and the Consulate General of France in Edinburgh are participating in Doors Open Days, which invites people to discover Edinburgh’s architectural and cultural heritage for free. Across the weekend of September 29th and 30th. We will be opening to the public the doors of our new building on West Parliament Square and the Scottish Free French House, Official Residence of the Consul General of France in Scotland.

In addition to FREE visits open to ALL, we will also be hosting a series of talks organised by the Cockburn Association, the organisation that coordinates Doors Open Days in Edinburgh from Monday, 23 September to Friday, 27 September. We have also invited French pianist Maxime Zecchini to perform a concert of Ravel, Debussy, and other French composers on Saturday, 28 September.

About the Institut français d'Ecosse
There have been public buildings on this site for centuries. The present one was inaugurated in 1904 for Midlothian County. Since September 2017, it houses the Institut français d'Ecosse and Consulate General of France in Scotland, serving as a centre for cultural exchanges in the very heart of the Old Town and civic centre of Edinburgh. All are welcome to discover the architecture, our cultural offerings, and some unique treasures shown as part of “behind the scenes” guided tours.

The Institut français d'Ecosse is accessible with step-free access available at West Parliament Square and George IV Bridge. Step-free access between floors is available via a lift.

About the Scottish Free French House
Nestled on the hillside of Calton Hill, the Scottish Free French House is the Official Residence of the Consul General of France in Edinburgh. The building was purchased in 1942 by the Free French, who fled Nazi-occupied France and rallied around General de Gaulle in Britain to plan the Liberation of France. Since then the House has been the home of France’s much longer relationship with Scotland, and it has welcomed numerous guests coming from all over the world.
