History like you’ve never heard before. “Previously… Scotland’s History Festival 2019” will take place in the Institut français with amazing events. From the tragic stories of witch-hunting to the mysteries of Scottish DNA, discover the hot topics of this year’s festival!

From the 21st of November to 24th, Previously… will be offering our visitors a wide range of interesting events this year at the Institut français:

Day 2- 22 November 2019

Industrial History Panel with Eddie Small, Caroline Brown, Jacqueline Eccles and Emma Halford-Forbes (Chair)

  • Where: Institut français, Salle Emilienne Moreau-Evrard (1st Floor)
  • When: 22 November 2019, 12:00-1:30pm
  • About this event: Eddie Small will take us through Dundee’s industrial history. In Hidden Voices: Uncovering Stories of Asylum Care, Caroline and Jacqui will examine the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and explore what it was like to be a patient in an asylum in the 19th century. They will also discuss how this research can inform approaches to mental health care today. All three speakers will then join Emma of Go Industrial! to discuss history, industrial heritage and identity.

The Physix with Siân Hickson

  • Where: Institut français, Salle Emilienne Moreau-Evrard (1st Floor)
  • When: 22 November 2019, 3.00pm-4.00pm
  • About this event: The story of six physicists, women from the mid 18th century to present day. This talk is a recognition of the effacement of women’s key role in the history of science and the enormous barriers that had to be overcome for their contributions to be sanctioned and recognised.

It was Twenty Years Ago Today … from 1999 to the Present by Dr Gerry Hassan and guests

  • Where: Institut français, Salle Kieffer (1st Floor)
  • When: 22 November 2019, 6.00pm-7.00pm
  • About this event: This is history bang up to the present day. Even as we write this, we don’t know what’s going to happen in current Brexit dominated climate. Gerry and his guests take a look at the recent history of Scotland to try to unpick how we got here. Wherever ‘here’ is by then…

The Whiskey Rebellion with Frank Cogliano and David Silkenat

  • About this event: The Whiskey Rebellion is a weekly podcast that seeks to provide historical context for contemporary events in the US. The hosts are two US ex-pats who teach American history at the University of Edinburgh. During this live episode, they will discuss the history of US-French relations and take questions from the audience. Previous episodes available here
