Writing & Criticism Workshop: Dana Rufulo

About Dr Dana Rufulo
Holding an MA in theatre theory and criticism and a doctorate in theatre studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison (USA), as well as a DESS in Art Therapy with special emphasis on Drama Therapy from the University of Luxembourg in conjunction with the University of Paris V, Dr Phil Dana Rufolo is the founding director of the Theatre Research Institute of Europe (aka TRIE, pronounced “try”). The special feature of TRIE is that it comprises a performance wing called TRIE Justice.

During her prolific career, Dr Rufulo has published numerous academic articles on theatre and on drama therapy. Her articles on her theory of “Aesthetic Empathy” received literary prizes in the country of Luxembourg which has classified her as a national writer; her writings are stored at the Centre National de Littérature in Mersch, Luxembourg for future researchers.

Performer, poet, and short story and play writer, Dufulo has seen her plays Hurt and Dignified produced at the 2007 European Capital of Culture, and her narrative poetry book “I am Viola da Gamba” staged at the Conservatoire de Luxembourg in 2012.

Since 2016, Dana Rufolo is also the editor-in-chief of the London-based theatre magazine Plays International & Europe, where she has excelled in keeping the classic tradition of the hand-held magazine alive by championing the individuality of the critic-correspondents who write for the magazine by inviting talented theatre critics to develop their own personal voice.

About the workshop
Dana Rufulo will be holding a two-day workshop that focuses on:

• Developing the ability to look, listen, observe, interpret, understand, and analyze a performance,
• Developing the skills to write about that performance in a way that conveys a sense of its uniqueness, attributes, and shortfalls.

This workshop is geared towards college undergraduates and first-year graduate students majoring in theatre and the performance arts, journalism, or critical writing studies. It can also be attractive for members of the general public who have an interest in and/or training in theatre and the performance arts.
The workshop will be used is intended to be an eye-opening, transformative experience for the participants. It is intended to welcome them to the world of performance criticism where they learn that their own personal and emotional reactions are secondary to understanding performance in terms of the criteria that control its artistic form.
At the end of the first day, participants will have gained a significant amount of knowledge and insight in respect to how to look at performance as an art form.
At the end of the second day, they should have absorbed elementary notions of how to write a critical article about performance.

The nature of the Socratic method of learning requires the active participation of the audience, therefore, the number of places for the workshop are limited.
