About the author:
Andreï Makine was born in Krasnoyarsk, the Soviet Union on 10 September 1957 and grew up in the city of Penza, a provincial town about 440 miles south-east of Moscow. The origins of Makine’s mastery of the French language (whether it is through family or friends) remain a mystery.
In 1987, he went to France as a member of the teacher’s exchange program and decided to stay. He was granted political asylum and was determined to make a living as a writer in French. Le testament français is his fourth novel, published in 1995 in France, winner of prestigious awards such as the Prix Goncourt, the Prix Medicis, and the Goncourt des Lycéens.
